Frequently Asked Questions

How efficient are log homes for heating and cooling? Our log homes are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The main reason for this is the size of the logs. Unlike conventional construction where insulation is measured in R-value and is incorporated into the structure by using fiberglass or other products, in a log house the insulation comes from the cellular structure of the log which is measured in thermal mass. For instance, a smaller log has considerably less thermal mass than a 12"-14" log. Using the envelope method of calculating R-equivalency we're happy to say our log homes, when finished as recommended, have an equivalent R-value of R30+ which is very high.

Can I design my own log house and, if so, do I need an architect? Yes, you can, and no, you don't. It can save you time and money if you use our competent and professional design and drafting services.

Are log homes difficult to maintain? Not our log homes. When you build a Mountain State Log Home we provide you with expert advice on how to maintain it.

Do you sell log home "kits"? No, we don't, and for a good reason. An important part of our warranty is that we erect the log portion of the house on your foundation and sub-floor, which usually requires 1 1/2 - 3 days. We then know it is done properly. Mountain State Log Homes provides a complete free standing log shell ready for finishing with dimensional materials.

How difficult is it to finish a log home? We make the log package as "builder friendly'' as possible. The contractor does not need a logsmith's tools to finish your home. We also provide complete details with each set of construction drawings and a free consultation service.

How soon can you deliver? Usually between 60-90 days after you have approved the drawings for construction, signed the Sale/Purchase Contract and the first payment has been received. Commercial projects may take longer.

Do you provide free estimates? Yes. We are ready to make your log home dream come true, so don't wait. Fax or mail us your sketches or plans today.
